The Milky Way

BY: MEGAN GILMORE

Have you ever gone outside on a cloudless night and looked up at the night sky? The stars sparkling - have you ever tried to count them? It is impossible. I was recently in Hawaii for a family vacation and it was our final night there - I found myself standing with my siblings staring up at the Milky Way.

I had never seen the night sky so clearly. There was not a cloud in the sky and the moon was nowhere to be seen. I looked up to the heavens and saw the stars twinkling so brightly - it almost seemed unreal.

I could not help but pause and stand in awe of God. He created the sky with just his words. I love how the New Living Translation states it, “The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.” That is powerful - by His breath this vast and beautiful sky was created.

As I continued to look up into the sky, I couldn't help but feel peace wash over me. The God of this breathtaking night sky has called each one of the stars - even the shooting star - by name. I have no need to worry or fear what is to come because God is in control.

Isaiah 40:26 reminds me that He is all powerful. “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” Isaiah 40:26. Not a single star is missing in the sky. God has called each one by name.

This tells me that God knows your name. He is calling you by name. He knows exactly where you are. You are not alone.

When you need a reminder of how all powerful our God is go look at the sky. Remember His breath spoke it into being. His words breathe life into you. He is calling you by your name and you are not far from His loving arms.
